Women leaving home without permission
Contents > Social Life in Islam > Women leaving home without permission
Khuruj al-Mar'ah Biduni Izin - You must know that it is forbidden for a woman to leave her house without permission. Ibn ‘Omar reports from the Prophet that once a lady came to the Prophet and asked him about the rights of a husband on his wife. He replied:
“She should not leave his house without his permission.” Sunan al-Bayhaqi, no. 14490
However that does not mean that she is not allowed to leave the home at all or that her husband is allowed to imprison her or bring undue hardship on her, The Messenger of Allah (saw) told his wife Sawdaa,
“Allah has permitted you to go out for your needs.” Saheeh al-Bukhari
He also said,
“If someone’ (saw) wife asks his permission to go to the mosque, he should not deny it to her.” Saheeh al-Bukhari
On another occasion he said,
“Do not prevent the bond-maids of Allah from (going to) Allah’ (saw) mosques.” Saheeh al-Muslim
The good husband will only prevent his wife from leaving the house for a good reason, such as to prevent her from sinning or to protect her.
